When to Consider Bereavement Therapy
Many people cope with family/friends and time. Therapy helps when grief is:
-
Intense and unrelenting months after the loss
-
Disrupting daily life (sleep, work, relationships)
-
Complicated by trauma (sudden/violent death, intrusive images)
-
Stuck in loops of guilt, anger, or avoidance
-
Entangled with anxiety/OCD or depression
(About 1 in 10 bereaved people develop Prolonged Grief Disorder, a persistent, impairing grief that benefits from targeted treatment.)
How I Work
I’m a BABCP-accredited psychotherapist offering an evidence-based, compassionate and humane approach, tailored to your loss: I am trained in several effective, and research-backed, approaches - including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR) from which we will draw to help you and your specific circumstances.
Together we’ll set clear goals (e.g., “sleep through the night,” “return to work,” “visit places avoided since the death”, "reconnect with friends and family") and measure progress. We will work to understand triggers and what processes are keeping your grief 'stuck'. We will work to ease rumination and avoidance, develop more effective ways of handling emotions, and focusing on rebuilding connection with important parts of your life.
Traumatic Loss
Some losses are not only painful but traumatic — sudden deaths, accidents, suicide, military or emergency service incidents, can lead to PTSD like symptoms. In these cases, grief is often tangled up with shock, intrusive images, flashbacks, or avoidance. When trauma symptoms are present, it’s hard to grieve because your mind keeps reliving the event instead of processing the loss.
In these situations, we can choose between recommended trauma approaches, such as integrating EMDR therapy. EMDR is recommended by NICE for post-traumatic stress, and it helps the brain reprocess disturbing memories so they become less raw and intrusive. Once the trauma has been stabilised, space opens up to engage with the grief itself.
