Online EMDR Therapy

Online EMDR Therapy (UK-wide) — Effective, Evidence-Based, Targeted, Help for Trauma and Distressing Memories

Online EMDR therapy, across the UK, for adults.  EMDR is an evidence-based treatment for PTSD and related traumatic and intrusive memories, by helping the brain process traumatic memories so they lose their painful intensity.

The Problem:

After trauma, the brain sometimes “gets stuck.” Memories feel as if they’re happening right now — vivid, intrusive, and triggering strong emotional or physical reactions. You might:

  • Relive the event in nightmares or flashbacks

  • Feel anxious, jumpy, or hyper-alert

  • Avoid reminders and shut down emotionally

  • Carry guilt, shame, or self-blame long after the event

There are several evidence-based approaches for addressing these difficulties, of which EMDR, alongside Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, currently has the greatest amount of research to support it's use.

What is EMDR?

EMDR is recommended by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It uses sets of guided eye movements (or other forms of bilateral stimulation) while you briefly bring the memory to mind. This helps the brain re-file the memory properly so it becomes less distressing, reducing the impact of traumatic memories on your daily life.

Research shows EMDR can be highly effective for:

  • Single-incident trauma (e.g., accidents, assaults, medical emergencies)

  • Childhood trauma or neglect

  • Military/veteran experiences

  • Distressing memories linked to anxiety, depression, or grief

How online EMDR works

  1. Stabilisation & preparation – before beginning any processing of traumatic memories, we work to ensure you have what you need to be able to manage the thoughts and feelings that may arise safely.

  2. Targeting – identify memory targets, triggers, and present symptoms that are causing distress and impacting your negatively.

  3. Reprocessing – we address the distressing memories directly with the aim of reducing their impact and allowing them to be 'processed' effectively

  4. Closure – we consolidate the improvements you have achieved and plan next steps to ensure progress is maintained after therapy is completed

Practicalities

  • Suitability: not for acute crisis or unmanaged risk—if that’s present, we will discuss alternative approaches.

FAQ:

  • Is EMDR effective online?
Yes—EMDR has been shown to be effective when delivered online.

  • Do we start reprocessing immediately?
No—we prepare first and process once when it’s safe and agreed.

  • Will I need homework?
Brief grounding or resourcing between sessions is typical.

  • What if I dissociate?
We’ll use pacing, titration, and stabilisation strategies; EMDR pauses when required.

  • Will EMDR erase my memories?
No — you’ll still remember what happened, but it won’t carry the same raw emotional punch

  • How quickly will I notice results?

  • Some people feel a shift after just a few sessions. Others need more time, especially with multiple or complex traumas.

  • Is EMDR safe?
Yes, but it can bring up strong emotions during processing. That’s normal. I’ll help you regulate and ensure you leave each session stable.

  • What if I’m not sure?
We always begin with an initial assessment to review your history, explain the process, and check if EMDR is right for you. If, for any reason, EMDR is not deemed suitable at this time, you will be given a comprehensive rationale and alternative options explored.
